Training advise for new students

Dear Member,

Welcome to Petushin Martial Arts! Thank you for choosing our school for your training. Our instructors are focused on providing you the finest instruction in the area! Each member is expected to train in a safe manner, along with showing respect and courtesy to the other members. The dojo (school) is a place of self-discipline. However, new members are not expected to “know everything”, so don’t’ worry. Your main focus for the first month should just be to attend classes, enjoy your training, and keep it safe. Remember; let your body adjust to the training. Don’t go too hard too soon! Whenever you have a question, you may ask a senior member, an instructor, or myself. Questions are always welcome. I suggest you adhere to the following success formula for your training. If you follow these key points, your training will be enjoyable and rewarding.

Focus on consistent training.

  • Twice a week is good, three times is excellent. However, if you have a demanding schedule, once per week is okay. Not only is consistent attendance an important service to you, but also your participation and unique energy contributes to the group as a whole. If something ever prevents you from taking classes for a period of time, simply resume your training when you are ready. Keep in mind that you are not competing against anyone, and you train at your own pace.

Always warm up and stretch before training.

  • If you come to class late, or if you are training on your own, or even if you stopped training long enough to cool down, warm up to prevent injury!

Training is a form of meditation.

  • During training, the mind should remain completely focused on the activity-taking place, the body should be relaxed, and breathing should coincide with your movement. Athletes have described this state as being “in the zone”.

Learn from mistakes.

  • Don’t’ let mistakes disturb you, or slow your training. Success brings satisfaction, but challenging situations provide an opportunity to learn and grow.

Ask the instructor what you need to work on, and to review your technique.

  • During training you can simply ask, “am I doing this right?” The instructor will then watch you and make needed corrections, or confirm that you are doing it right.

Whatever your goals of training are, I am excited to help you achieve them! Don’t be one of the many who purchase a membership that they never use! I encourage you to commit yourself to consistent training now! Thank you once again for your support! Enjoy your training!
