Academy Etiquette
Martial arts have a long, rich tradition of respect and discipline. While Petushin Martial Arts enjoys a relaxed less formal approach to the teaching of martial arts, we also act with respect and discipline. We ask that our members and visitors respect our guidelines.
Preparing for Class
- Personal hygiene is important. Keep your body clean, use deodorant. Keep fingernails to toenails cut short.
- The gi (uniform) shall be clean, dry and not torn. Girls should wear a clean t-shirt under their gi.
- No shoes are allowed on the mat with the exception of wrestling shoes. Shoes should be removed and placed on the shelves provided in the coat closet.
- Do not go barefoot to the bathroom in order not to track the bacteria from the bathroom floor to the mat.
- Be punctual for classes, tournaments and meetings.
- Put your clothes in the bag and store them along with your jackets in the coat closet.
Class Behavior
- Treat others with respect and courtesy, particularly those older and of higher rank. If you must join a class after it has begun, enter quietly.
- Obey your instructors and address them in a polite manner. Do not talk when instructors are speaking.
- Once practice has begun, do not leave the mat area without permission from an instructor.
- Turn off your cell phones, do not eat or drink on the mat. (Water bottles are allowed near the mat).
- Unlike many traditional dojos we no longer require our students to bow to the mat. We see it as an outdated tradition that has no place in modern day America. We think that simple hand shake is a sufficient sign of respect. We only bow twice as a group to begin and end a class period. Shake you training partner’s hand before and after practicing with them.
Spectators/Visitors
- Spectators are always welcome.
- No shoes are allowed on the mat.
- Please refrain from loud, excessive talking or making noise during class, especially when instructors are speaking. This is a school and our students need to focus on what is being taught.
Attitude
Strong vibrant and clean sportsmanlike attitude is always encouraged. Humor and having fun is the true spirit of our sport and way of life. Enjoy what you do!
The true spirit includes executing techniques without hurting or intimidating your training partner. We warmly welcome grappling practitioners from around the world. Please drop in and work our with us.
